History of Narolians.

I am writing my history and hope most of you send me your story in English or Gujarati - Thanking you.

Yusuf Hasan Bhorat, born 16 June 1931 in Naroli.

1944-1950. After basic Dinee Talim and Class 4 study in Naroli went to Gala Madressa in 1944 (6 months).  Due to ill health same year went to Kholvad for Std.I. Studied Std.II & III in Tadkeshwar, Std.IV in Mangrol  and  Std V to Metric in The Khoja Khan Mohamed Habibbhai High School,Dongri,Bombay9.

1951-1964. Living  in Bombay was very difficult. Job No. : (1) Worked as night shift watchman in Bombay High Court Sheriff's Dept. for Rs.50  per month also did photography and salesman job with late Ismailbhai Mogradia, Job No. : (2) Mohamed Agboatwla, 283A Abdur Rehman Street, Bombay as a Typist-Clerk Rs.90 p.m. and finally in Job No. : (3) Mazagon Docks (Ship Repairers & Ship Builders) wages was Rs.400. Married on 30th December 1956. Before migrating to UK lived at Mahim 1 year and Shanker Niwas, Underai Road, Malad (West) for 5 years.

1962.  UK Immigration law came into force. Prior to this Commonwealth Citizen could buy air ticket and enter UK.   Chota Badat sent Employment Voucher without my consent. Having good job in Bombay I was not willing to come. It was tough time to make decision - leave a good job and migrate to unknown planet. Late Mr. M.E.Patel insisted me to come.

1964. Came to  UK in August of 1964 by M.E.A Flight fare was Rs.3500. I could only  take £3/10 Shilling with me from India. The value of 1£ was Rs.13. Mr. Chhota Badat was  at Heathrow Airport to receive.   Stayed at Prince George Road, London-N16 for 4 weeks  and then  came to Bolton, No.3 Lockbank Street  Mr. M.E.Patel's 1 1/2 bed-room house , 7 of us (Myself, Qari Bobat, Gulam Limbada, Yusuf Pandor, Gora Mulla, Kara Mulla and Mehmood Patel) used to share. There was no Bathroom facility. Nearest bath facility was 1/2 mile away at High Street Public Bath.
Cooking was very difficult job. Hardly fry an egg.  Halal meat was not available. Once in a week used to go to farm at Hunger Hill, Wigan Road to buy chicken.  We started Jamat Namaz at 13 Derby Street, Bolton (Moosabhai Irani's House).

Started Night Shift Job in Tootle Mill, Adelaide Street, Bolton in Winding Dept. same day  arrived in Bolton.  The  weekly wage was  £11/10 Shilling, after deduction  take home pay was £ 10, out of this  had to pay £1 for boarding. Due to labour shortage if you take somebody for a job , Employee used to give  £ 5.  After 6 months joind Bolton Transport as a Bus Conductor. Wage was £ 13 but there was ample scope for overtime. Winter was ver very cold. The buses were back loader. There used to be 2 conductors on double decker.     

1965. Bought a 3 bedroom house 79 Auburn Street with bathroom facility and outside tipped toilet for the price of £ 750 in 1965. Paid £50 deposit balance to be paid at £19/10 Shilling p.m. At that time there was no other Asian property to this side of Derby Street(east). Gora Mulla was living with me. Bread packet was always ready on the dining table for main meal with fried egg. Used to work 70/80 hours each week.

Family arrived from India on 21/10/65.

Bought my first Car Ford Popular (2 door, 3 speed gearbox) for £ 35 after passing my driving test on 27/11/67.(to be continued)
